Visitors throng Edinburgh's Royal MileThe Scottish Parliament website contains information in a range of languages other than English.

The use of languages is determined by the Scottish Parliamentary Coporate Body (SPCB) and is set out in its Language Policy. (The language policy is also available as a PDF document - SPCB Language Policy (23.7KB pdf).)

We have translated information into the following language groupings:

1 Scottish Citizen Languages
Arabic, Bengali, British Sign Language (BSL)British Sign Language, Chinese, Gaelic, Punjabi, Scots and Urdu.

We are committed to making the Parliament accessible to the people of Scotland and encouraging their participation.

English is the normal working language of the Scottish Parliament, but the SPCB's view is that there are strong historical and cultural reasons for the Parliament to carry out work in Gaelic, as well as encouraging the use of Scots, and that there are strong access reasons for carrying out work in other languages, including sign language. The Gaelic pages of the site are comprehensive and mirror the English language pages as far as possible. Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Punjabi and Urdu are the languages in which translations have been most frequently asked for by Scottish citizens.

2 Visitor Languages
French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian.

We welcome visitors from a wide range of countries, and make some information available in the languages spoken by our most frequent visitors. These languages were chosen for translation with reference to statistics on the highest visitor numbers to Scotland over recent years.
