A Parliament is a group of representatives who have been chosen by the people to make decisions on their behalf.

The main job of a Parliament is deciding on new laws or rules.

The people in the Scottish Parliament represent us. They are known as MSPs (Members of the Scottish Parliament) and are expected to look after all the people in their area, whether or not they voted for them at election time.

Members of Parliament can suggest new laws or changes to laws. They discuss arguments for and against issues and can question those responsible for the running of the country.

A Parliament normally helps to decide how the country's money should be spent.

Some well-known examples of Parliaments are the House of Commons & House of Lords (UK), the Senate & House of Representatives (USA), and the European Parliament. Click here to explore Parliaments. (link to interactive chamber)
