Proposal for a replacement for the Scottish Parliamentary Pension Scheme: Consultation and call for evidence

Background

In the lead up to the establishment of the Scottish Parliament, following recommendations by the Senior Salaries Review Board, pension arrangements were established for Members and office holders which mirrored those at Westminster.

Since then there have been a number of legislative changes which have affected all occupational pension schemes, and equalities legislation has also developed.  As a result it is necessary to amend the original scheme rules.  This change requires an Act of the Scottish Parliament. The Scottish Parliament agreed that scrutiny be undertaken by a committee established for that purpose.

Remit

The Scottish Parliamentary Pension Scheme Committee’s remit is “to inquire into and report with recommendations for a Committee Bill on a replacement for the Scottish Parliamentary Pension Scheme rules and the Grants to Members and Officeholders Order”.

Call for evidence

The Committee issued a consultation paper and call for evidence on the proposal for a replacement for the Scottish Parliamentary Pension Scheme.  The call for evidence closed on 17 January 2008.
