HOLYROOD COMMITTEE VISITS ELGIN TO HEAR EVIDENCE ON FLOODING

11 February 2008

Residents of Elgin will have an opportunity to view the Scottish Parliament’s Rural Affairs and Environment Committee in operation when it meets at Moray College in Elgin on Tuesday 19 February.

The Committee’s meeting is part of its current inquiry into flooding and flood management. As well as taking evidence from three local authorities – Moray Council, and Glasgow and Edinburgh Councils – Committee members will also hear from two panels comprising local residents and business representatives.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the Committee Meeting. To book tickets for the meeting please call the Scottish Parliament’s Visitor Services on 0131 348 5200.

The Committee meeting will take place in Moray College at 10.00 am and will conclude around 1.00 pm . The evidence sessions will be open to the public.

In the afternoon, Committee members, accompanied by Moray Council officials, will visit areas of Elgin that were directly affected by flooding in 1997 and 2002.

Committee Convener Roseanna Cunningham MSP said:

“Flooding has had a major impact on the people of Elgin . Committee members are keen to hear directly from witnesses about how flooding affected them, and what lessons were learned from those experiences.

“In this inquiry, we’ve already learned that climate change is going to make flooding a bigger problem in the future, and that more than the traditional hard flood defences are needed to address the threat. The meeting in Elgin will be an important part of the Committee’s listening and learning on this complex subject.”
