Finance Committee publishes research on the economic impact of the Scottish Budget
CFIN005/2006 | 15 September 2006
The Finance Committee has today published research on the economic impact of the Scottish Budget.
Des McNulty MSP, convener of the committee said:
"As part of the committee's strategic work in advance of next year's spending review, we commissioned external research to look at public spending trends and plans and to consider what fiscal options could be used to stimulate economic growth.
"There are many interesting ideas contained in the report and the committee hopes that its publication will contribute to the wider debate on public spending.
"However, it should not be inferred that the committee is endorsing (or otherwise) the recommendations contained in the report."
Background
This committee agreed to commission the external research in December 2005 and this was carried out by Experian.
The remit for the research was to:
establish the direct contribution made by the Scottish Budget to annual economic growth since devolution
conduct a literature review to examine the indirect economic impact of mainstream spending programmes
provide advice to the committee on possible alternative Budget distributions which would enhance economic growth
The report can be accessed at: http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/business/committees/finance/reports-06/fir-06-ScottishBudgetFinal_061005.pdf (365KB pdf)
The report contains a two page executive summary in section 1 of the report.
