Parliament's Communities Committee to hold a formal meeting in Airdrie

CCOM004/2006 | 21 November 2006

The Communities Committee will hold a formal meeting in the @Home Centre in Airdrie on Wednesday 22 November as part of its Stage 1 scrutiny of the Schools (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Bill.

The MSPs will take evidence from Barnardo’s Scotland, Children in Scotland, One Plus and Save the Children, as well as two pupils from Rosehall High School in Coatbridge and a young person representing the @Home Centre in Airdrie.

The committee is taking evidence from various organisations as part of its scrutiny of the bill, which aims to promote health in schools, ensure all food and drink available to pupils meets nutritional standards and increase the uptake of school meals.

Committee convener, Karen Whitefield MSP, said:

"The Hungry for Success initiative has made significant progress in improving the quality of school meals in Scotland. The Communities Committee is considering the ways in which the Schools (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Bill seeks to build on that and further promote health in schools.

"The committee has already taken evidence from key stakeholders on the Bill and will hear from children’s organisations and young people at the meeting in Airdrie. The Committee is particularly keen to understand how health and good nutrition can successfully be promoted by schools.”
