Communities Committee seeks views on the provision of healthy meals and snacks in Scottish schools

CCOM002/2006 | 2 October 2006

Views on proposed legislation which aims to ensure all meals and snacks available in schools are nutritionally balanced are being sought by the Scottish Parliament's Communities Committee.

The Schools (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Bill aims to promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles in schools. One key proposal is that all foods and drinks that are available to pupils should meet set nutritional standards. The bill also aims to promote the uptake of school lunches and to protect the identity of those in receipt of free school meals.

In its scrutiny of the proposals, the Communities Committee is seeking written evidence on the general principles of the bill, including:

  • Overall objectives

  • The duty to ensure that all schools are health-promoting

  • Nutritional requirements of food and drink supplied in schools

  • The applications of nutritional requirements

  • Provision of food and drink (within defined nutritional standards) at any time of the day

  • Promotion of school meals, in particular free school meals

  • Protection of the identity of pupils receiving free school meals.
