JUSTICE COMMITTEES VISIT GLASGOW SHERIFF COURT |
|
|
Members of the Scottish Parliament’s two Justice Committees will today visit the Glasgow Sheriff Court. The visit has been organised as part of the Committees’ programme of information gathering on Scotland’s justice system in general. Convener of Justice 1 Committee, Pauline McNeil, said: “Seeing the justice system in action is an important part of our work. Meeting the people who work with the justice system on a daily basis can only help to increase our understanding of the system. This is particularly important given that the Executive is currently reviewing summary procedure and is about to legislate to amend criminal procedure.” Convener of Justice 2 Committee, Annabel Goldie, said: “Practical experience of how the court system in Scotland works is vital to our work on the Justice Committees. We need to be able to understand how justice bills will affect these systems so that we can be effective in our scrutiny of the Executive’s proposals.” Background The Parliament determined in January 2001 that it wished to have two
Justice Committees, owing to the volume of legislation within the justice
remit. This decision was agreed to again at the start of the Parliament’s
second session in May this year. |
