SIR DAVID STEEL RESIGNS FROM COUNTRYSIDE ALLIANCE

Sir David Steel, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, indicated some weeks ago that his list of various interests accumulated over the years would be kept under revision. One of these is his Vice-Presidency (an honorary role) of the Countryside Alliance.

Since some MSPs have indicated that they wish to introduce a bill to ban hunting with dogs in Scotland – a measure which will be vigorously opposed by the Countryside Alliance, which exists to protect the rural way of life in every aspect – Sir David believes that his neutrality as Presiding Officer requires him to relinquish this post.

Accordingly, he has informed the Chairman of the Countryside Alliance of his resignation both as Vice-President and as a member with immediate effect.

BACKGROUND NOTE

On 9 July, Sir David resigned his from his position as Director of Border Television Ltd (news release number 0027/99). Although not required to do so under statute, Sir David wished to avoid any future potential conflict of interest as Border TV is one of the contributors under contract to the broadcasting of the Parliament.

The Register of Interests of Members is available on the Scottish Parliament Website. Members of the public and media can also view a loose-leaf paper version of the register at the Standards Committee Office, Parliamentary Headquarters, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh.
