Following
today's board meeting of Border Television Ltd, Presiding Officer of the Scottish
Parliament, Sir David Steel, officially resigned his position as Director of the company.
The text of his resignation letter of 5 July to the Chairman, Jim Graham, was as follows:
"Dear Jim
"I am looking forward to our lunch together later this month. Meantime, I am sad to
tell you that this week's board meeting will be my last. I wish to step down as a Director
of the company at the annual general meeting due shortly.
"I have been advised that my role as Presiding Officer does not require me to do so,
but although we have no statutory responsibilities for broadcasting I know that one of our
committees is naturally anxious to keep an eye on broadcasting policy and administration
within Scotland.
"Also, Border Television is one of the contributors under contract to the
broadcasting of the Parliament. It is possible that in the future a conflict of interest
could arise. I also might have difficulty attending meetings on six Fridays in the year.
"Can I say how much I have enjoyed my years on the Board, witnessing both the
unrivalled local service to the Borders and the expansion of the company into radio. I
shall miss it all very much, and wish you and your colleagues all success in the future.
"I shall copy this letter to the Scottish member of the Independent Television
Commission.
"Yours ever, David Steel."
BACKGROUND NOTE
Sir David Steel's resignation will be effective from today, Friday 9 July.
