The Scottish Parliament’s Presiding Officer Alex Fergusson MSP was among those celebrating 60 years of friendship between Scotland and India at an event in Edinburgh recently.

World class Bhangra and Ceilidh music and Indian folk and Scottish country dancing were highlights of the event, which was hosted by the Scottish Indian Arts Forum and held to mark the 60th anniversary of India’s independence.

Communities of Scotland

In his address to those attending on Saturday 18 August, Mr Fergusson said the Indian community was an important part of Scottish multi-culturalism and had produced many talented individuals who have helped to grow Scotland.

"Whether here in Princes Street Gardens or in the communities of Scotland or internationally between our two nations, let us continue to work together, promoting peace and building a better future for both Scotland and India.”

Engagement with the Parliament

Mr Fergusson also talked about the Parliament’s focus on encouraging equality and accessibility through hosting events such as the Commission for Racial Equality Reception on “Tackling the Diversity Deficit”, which looked at what could be done to better engage minority communities in the decision making process.

Other speakers at the event included the Consul General of India, Ramesh Chander.
