Community groups get inside guide to Holyrood from Presiding Officer

083/2006 | 2 November 2006

Clackmannanshire residents will get a chance to hear first hand how Holyrood really works from the MSP who presides over Parliament, when he attends an outreach event in Dollar next week.

Presiding Officer and Ochil MSP George Reid will be speaking to local community groups at 8 pm on Monday 6 November as part of a presentation and question and answer session, along with Mid Scotland and Fife regional MSPs Murdo Fraser (Conservative) and Andrew Arbuckle (Liberal Democrat).

The event is designed to give local communities more information from their local MSPs about the Scottish Parliament, how it works and how they can become more involved.

Speaking of the forthcoming event, Presiding Officer George Reid said:

"It’s a real pleasure for me to be taking part in this event in my own constituency – and it’s a further demonstration of our commitment to making the Scottish Parliament ever more open and accessible.

"Events like these are vital for MSPs to help communities understand how they can get involved and influence the democratic process.”

Background

The Dollar Community Outreach Event will be held at the Dollar Civic Centre, Park Place and run from 7-9pm.

Those taking part in the event include community councils from Alloa Centre, Alloa West, Alva and Dollar, along with local police representatives and other youth and community groups.

Since September 2004, a total of 42 similar events have been held at locations across Scotland – including at Benbecula, Gretna and Lochinver.

Last year, almost 4000 representatives from community groups attended the Parliament’s outreach meetings.
