Crieff school pupils to sing at Scottish Parliament
105/2005 | 4 November 2005
Creiff High School choir is set to perform three songs at the Scotland-Malawi Partnership Conference, which is currently taking place at the Scottish Parliament.
The event runs today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday). The choir, comprising around 25 girls, will take to the stage tomorrow at 6pm in the Parliament’s Garden Lobby, in front of an audience of 250 people.
Their repertoire includes the song ‘Build A Bridge’, composed by Principal Music Teacher David Griffiths. Originally written for a school show, the song was penned to encapsulate tolerance, inclusion and strength in unity – and with the G8 summit in mind, the lyrics were recently reworked.
Convinced the song would be an apt official anthem for the summit, S3 pupil Joanne Craig began writing letters to key figures including the Prime Minister to highlight the song.
Teacher David Griffiths said:
“I have Joanne to thank for writing to so many people including Tony Blair, Jack McConnell and Midge Ure.
“The Foreign Office got in touch and although they didn’t agree to performance at the G8, we did get an invite and a chance to hand our CDs to the Minister for Africa and the UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Lord Treisman, who assured us he would pass copies on.”
The lyrics of Build A Bridge are particularly apt for Saturday’s event, with lines including “we will show what we can do when we work together” and “together we can build a new tomorrow”.
The choir’s other songs – also compositions by Mr Griffiths - are “Do Something Good for the Earth”, about the simple gift of life, and “Afore Ye Go”, about endings, farewells and new beginnings.
Background
Aimed at examining the links between Scotland and Malawi, the event will be officially opened by Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal and Malawi’s President, His Excellency Dr Bingu wa Mutharika. Both are Co-Presidents of the Scotland-Malawi Partnership. More information on the President's visit.
Delegates at the conference will look at the challenges and opportunities facing Malawi, and the conference provide a platform for debating solutions.
