Debate on Malawi to be held at Holyrood

A conference to examine the challenges and opportunities facing Malawi and provide a platform for debating solutions will be held at the Scottish Parliament on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 November.
The Presiding Officers will chair the conference, which will be officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and The President of Malawi, the co-Presidents of the Scotland-Malawi Partnership.
A full programme for the event is outlined at the end of this Operational Note.
Media access to the conference for journalists, photographers and broadcasters is on a pre-arranged basis only. The following outlines arrangements for:
• Accredited and non accredited media
• Photography pools and open calls
• Broadcasting pools and feed
Media Access
Media Access for Scottish Parliament accredited media
Media with Scottish Parliament security passes can access the Media Gallery for the conference directly.
Media Access for non-accredited media
Names for all media (journalists, broadcasters and photographers) wishing to attend who do not have Scottish Parliament security passes must contact the Parliament’s Media Relations Office to secure a day pass.
Photographic ID will be required but NUJ cards are not accepted.
Facilities for filing copy for organisations other than those based at the Parliament are not available.
Photo and broadcast opportunities
To summarise, the following picture opportunities are available on Friday:
8.45 for 9.00am:
HRH The Princess Royal, the Presiding Officer and the Lord Provost meet key participants in the conference, including the President of Malawi.
Photo opportunity: Garden Lobby stairs on a pool basis. The Parliament’s official photographer will be in attendance.
Parliament’s Broadcasting Unit will have a camera in position.
9.00 to 10.00am:
Opening of conference - Speeches by Rt Hon George Reid MSP, Presiding Officer, The Scottish Parliament; Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal; Rt Hon Jack McConnell MSP, First Minister of Scotland and His Excellency Dr Bingu wa Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi.
Photo opportunity: A pool system will be in place from the Media Gallery. Additionally, our own photographer will be on the floor of the Debating Chamber – photographs will be available from the Media Relations Office.
On Saturday:
2.15pm to 5.30pm
Concluding the conference. Speech from the Rt Hon Sir David Steel KT.
