HM THE QUEEN APPROVES PRESIDING OFFICER’S APPOINTMENT TO PRIVY COUNCIL

 

The Queen has today approved the Prime Minister’s nomination of The Presiding Officer, George Reid to Her Majesty’s Privy Council.

The Presiding Officer said:

“On a personal level, it is an honour to be appointed to the Privy Council. As Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, it is recognition of the important role the Scottish Parliament plays in our democratic process.”

Background

There are about 500 Privy Counsellors, whose appointments are for life. The Presiding Officer will now be titled “The Right Honourable" George Reid MSP.

Biography

George Reid was born in Tullibody, Clackmannanshire, in 1939. He was educated at Tullibody School, Dollar Academy and the University of St Andrews, from which he graduated with first class honours.

Mr Reid worked as a journalist and television producer for BBC, Granada Television and Scottish Television. For twelve years he was Director of Public Affairs for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent, working in conflict and disaster zones worldwide.

Mr Reid was MP from Clackmannan and East Stirlingshire from 1974 (February election) to 1979. He was a member of the Consultative Steering Group prior to the establishment of the Scottish Parliament, to which he was elected in 1999 as regional list Member for Mid Scotland and Fife. In 2003 he was elected as Member for Ochil.
