The Presiding Officer George Reid last night presented the Prince's Trust Scottish Young Achiever of the Year Award at a ceremony in Edinburgh.

The award recognises the success of a young person in getting a job and overcoming substantial barriers to transform his or her life, and this year's winner was 20-year-old Andrew Kerr from Glasgow.

Congratulating all the winners and nominees at the event, George Reid said:

"The success stories which we celebrate tonight show a real 'can do' attitude. And all of us in the Scottish Parliament honour that. You make me, and my fellow MSPs, feel proud of you."

Andrew Kerr now goes on to compete against other Young Achievers for a place on the shortlist for the UK finals, which take place in London in Spring 2006.

Also nominated in the category were Scott McKay from Oban and Roddy Kirk from Falkirk.
