Petitions DVD reaches out to communities
7 December 2005
A DVD which documents the impact of the Scottish Parliament's Public Petitions Committee is now available.
The 'Petitioning the
Scottish Parliament' film explains how the committee enables people to engage with the democratic process, and is aimed at those working in the community.
Featuring interviews with petitioners, MSPs and parliament staff, it highlights the ways the Public Petitions Committee has been an instrument for change.
Topics covered include the e-petitions system,
which allows the public to raise and sign petitions online.
Committee Convener, Michael McMahon MSP, said:
“The Public Petitions Committee has been one of the success stories of the Scottish Parliament. It has hailed a new era of political engagement and members of the public have responded in their thousands.
“It is vital the process is open and understandable to as many community groups and workers to possible. The petitions we receive can effect real change in the political process and I am sure this DVD will open up the practice to many more people.”
More than 900 petitions have now been lodged at Holyrood, and in August 2005 the German Bundestag announced it was launching an electronic petitions system based on the Scottish version.
