Holyrood hosts disability at work event
22 September 2005
Disability in the workplace was the focus of a Scottish Parliament event last night, with a gathering of people dedicated to ensuring the right to employment of any person with a disability.
Delegates from the Workability International annual conference, being hosted by Remploy in Scotland, were given an overview of the Parliament and its approach to disability issues by the Presiding Officer George Reid.
He said: "As the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, all human beings are born equal in dignity and rights.
"Progress has been made but there is still quite a way to go, particularly in the field of disability.
"The Declaration recognises the right to work, and on behalf of the Parliament
I congratulate you on what you are doing in this field."
Remploy, which celebrates its Diamond Jubilee this year, finds jobs for disabled people in major organisations, as well as in its own manufacturing and service businesses.
Workability International is the world's largest body representing providers of work and employment services to people with a disability. The organisation is holding its annual conference in Edinburgh for the first time.
