Petition by Peter McCann, on behalf of the Castle Craig Hospital, calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to increase the availability and provision of residential and abstinent treatment for those who are alcohol and/or drug dependent.

On behalf of: Castle Craig Hospital
Number of signatures: 1
Date lodged: 10 January 2008
SPICe Briefing: Briefing for PE1113
Summary:

Written Submissions for PE1113

29 January 2008 :   The Committee agreed to seek responses to the issues raised in the petition from the Scottish Government (covering NHS Scotland), Scottish Association of Alcohol and Drug Action Teams, COSLA, Centre for Drug Misuse Research at the University of Glasgow, British Medical Association and two treatment centres, Turning Point and the Alexander Clinic. Link to Official Report 29 January 2008

13 May 2008 :   The Committee agreed to write to the Scottish Government asking it to respond further to the issues raised in the petition and the written submissions once it has published its new drugs strategy. Link to Official Report 13 May 2008

4 November 2008 :   The Committee agreed to defer consideration of the petition until its next meeting on 18 November 2008. Link to Official Report 4 November 2008

18 November 2008 :   The Committee agreed to close the petition on the grounds that the Scottish Government, following the recent publication of its drug strategy A Road to Recovery, is of the view that a range of treatment options, rather than specific treatments, should be in place to support people recovering from drug and alcohol misuse and that Audit Scotland is carrying out a study into the scale and effectiveness of public expenditure on drugs and alcohol services which will inform future spending priorities at a local and national level on drug and alcohol treatment.
