2 October 2007 : The Public Petitions Committee heard from Jayne Heron and Cassy McNamara and agreed to seek views on the petition from the Scottish Government, including all NHS Boards, the UK Department of Health, the Independent Midwives Association, the Royal College of Midwives, and the Association of British Insurers. 29 January 2008 : The Committee agreed to write to the Scottish Government on how it will support and assist independent midwives to ensure that, in line with its policy, pregnant women are given a choice in childbirth and whether the proposals being taken forward at UK level through the Health and Social Care Bill offer the best option for independent midwives and what alternatives, such as the Albany model, exist and have been suggested by it. 13 May 2008 : The Committee agreed to write to a selection of NHS boards seeking clarification of what options are available to them in terms of promoting and making available the services of independent midwives and how they are actively engaging with midwives in this. The Committee also agreed to write to the UK Department of Health to ascertain what impact the current Health and Social Care Bill will have on the issues raised in the petition.
