Call for Evidence on the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Bill

6 October 2004

The Scottish Parliament's Education Committee today called for views from all interested parties on the general principles of the Scottish Executive's Gaelic Language (Scotland) Bill.

The purpose of the Bill is to establish Bòrd na Gàidhlig in statute with the responsibility for overseeing the promotion of Gaelic and for developing a national Gaelic plan. The Bill also enables Bòrd na Gàidhlig to require public bodies to prepare Gaelic language plans.

The Education Committee is keen to receive written evidence on issues arising from the Bill, as introduced, to inform the Committee in its consideration of the general principles of the Bill.

Robert Brown MSP, the Convener of the Education Committee said: “I hope anyone interested in the future of Gaelic, both the language and culture, will take the chance to put in their views.”

Evidence received may be published by the Parliament and will be treated as a public document unless indicated otherwise. All responses will be circulated to the Committee.

All written evidence may be published and therefore it would be helpful if responses could be submitted by email to Gaelicbill@scottish.parliament.uk (This will enable evidence to be translated from Gaelic, if required, posted on the Committee's web page and circulated to members as Committee papers with the minimum of delay).

The last date for the receipt of written evidence is 1700 on Tuesday 30 November 2004 . Submissions received after this date will not be taken into consideration due to the necessary timescale required for the processing and analysis of evidence.

If you have a computer, but no email, you can post your response to us on a 3½" disk in Word format. If you cannot access email or a disk, your submission must be typed. Submissions should not exceed 4 sides of A4 paper. All responses become the property of the Scottish Parliament and we are unable to return documents.

Hard copy submissions should be sent to:
